Untapped
John Ghazvinian
Harcourt
Paperback, $15.00

Ghazvinian blew a huge book advance to do what few writers have done--hitch-hike through every major oil nation in Africa. Part travel-memoir, part history, and part politics, this is the most thrilling book on the world we don't know but should.

West with the Night
Beryl Markham
North Point Press
Paperback, $15.00

This book is extremely well written. It takes the reader to Africa in the first decades of the 20th century, and to the imagination of one who loves words and the wild. It is a memoir of adventures; the author tells of flying oxygen to a dying miner, of being "moderately eaten by a large lion" as a child, of training horses as a teen, and of hunting wild boar with a spear, alongside the tribesmen who taught her. She had quite a life, and she tells its highlights here.

Ordinary Princess
M. M. Kaye
Puffin Books
Paperback, $5.99

Travel to the kingdom of Phantasmorania and to the Forest of Faraway. Meet kitchen maids and men-of-all-work, a squirrel named Mr. Pemberthy, and a crow named Peter Aurelious. This is a wonderful tale about princesses and princes, fairy godmothers and Lord High Chamberlains, and it will bring smiles and chuckles to those who love children's stories.

Wave
Suzy Lee
Chronicle Books
Hardcover, $15.99

There are no words in this story, but plenty is told. Watch the girl, the waves, and the curious but shy seagulls, and their emotions will unfold before you.

Some say real men don't wear pink; they are wrong. Real men write and read amazing love poetry. Pablo Neruda touches upon love, politics, nature, and the mundane with eloquence and grace.
